Brush Roll - This is also known as the agitator and is found underneath the machine. This roller has bristles attached to it and spans the width of the base. It spins when the machine is on and dislodges dirt, dust and grit from the carpet so the vacuum's airflow can pick it up easily. Some models have a switch to turn the brush roll off when cleaning bare floors. Edge Cleaner - When cleaning wall-to-wall carpeting, models with this feature can extend cleaning to the edge of the carpet where carpeting meets the wall. Filter - There are varying grades of filters and filtration. Some vacuums do not have filters at all and simply deposit dust and dirt into a dust bag or dust compartment. Others have filters that can filter even the tiniest bits of pollen. Filtration systems collect particles from air drawn into the machine without allowing them to be redistributed back into the air via the vacuum's exhaust. Micron filters provide a high level of filtration and HEPA filters provides the highest level of filtration. Filtration is an important consideration for those battling allergies. Motor Amps - Amperes are units of measurement for determining the strength of electrical current passing through a wire. Vacuum motor amperage indicates the strength of electrical current the motor can utilize. The higher the amperage, the greater the power drawn from the electrical outlet to the motor. The range on vacuums is usually from 3.6 to 12 amps. There is a belief that higher amps means a more powerful vacuum. However, today's vacuums are designed to efficiently clean at lower amps. Dust Bag - Most upright vacuum cleaners have a bag where dust and dirt gathered by the machine are stored. This bag is generally made of thick paper or synthetic material and must be changed periodically when it becomes full. Bagless - There are also bagless models with dust and dirt storage compartments that must also be periodically dumped out. While some appreciate bagless models because the cost of bags can be avoided, cleaning a bagless vacuum is a dirty chore. In addition, filters in bagless vacuums must be cleaned frequently and replaced periodically and these are not inexpensive. Onboard hose storage - clips on the back or side of the vacuum to store the hose and other cleaning attachments. Dirt sensor - Indicates when surface has been deep cleaned. Full bag sensor - Indicates when a vacuum bag is full and needs to be changed. Though a vacuum bag may appear to still have capacity for holding dirt, it is important to change the bag when suction is not at a level high-enough for efficient carpet cleaning. Brush roll switch - An independent on/off switch for the rotating brush lets you turn off the brush when using tools or cleaning bare floors.
